Safeguarding Policy
 

1. Purpose
 

This policy outlines our commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and adults at risk involved in football activities. We aim to provide a safe, positive, and enjoyable environment for all participants, in line with FAW safeguarding standards.
 

2. Scope
 

This policy applies to:
- All players under 18
- Adults at risk
- Coaches, volunteers, officials, and club members
- Parents/carers and spectators

 

3. Key Principles
 

We will:
- Put the welfare of the child first at all times
- Ensure football is played in a safe and inclusive environment
- Take all concerns, allegations, or disclosures seriously
- Work in line with FAW safeguarding procedures and Welsh legislation
- Promote a culture of respect, equality, and fair play

 

The FAW states that all adults have a legal and moral responsibility to protect children in football.
 

4. Roles and Responsibilities
 

Club Responsibilities
- Adopt and follow FAW Safeguarding Policy, Practices & Procedures
- Appoint a Club Safeguarding Officer (CSO) (mandatory in Wales)
- Ensure safe recruitment (including DBS checks where required)
- Provide appropriate safeguarding training

 

Club Safeguarding Officer (CSO)
- Act as the first point of contact for safeguarding concerns
- Maintain records of concerns and actions
- Ensure compliance with FAW safeguarding requirements
- Liaise with FAW and statutory agencies when needed

 

Coaches & Volunteers
- Hold relevant qualifications and safeguarding training
- Maintain appropriate professional boundaries
- Report any concerns immediately

 

5. Safe Recruitment
 

We will:
- Carry out Enhanced DBS checks for relevant roles
- Verify identity, references, and qualifications
- Ensure all staff meet FAW requirements for working with children

 

6. Codes of Conduct
 

All members must:
- Treat children with respect and dignity
- Avoid inappropriate physical or verbal behaviour
- Never engage in bullying, discrimination, or abuse
- Use appropriate communication methods (especially online)

 

7. Good Practice Guidelines
 

We will:
- Ensure appropriate supervision ratios
- Maintain safe facilities and equipment
- Separate adults and children in changing areas where possible
- Follow FAW best practice for communication, travel, and online activity

 

8. Responding to Concerns
 

We follow the FAW principle: Respond – Record – Report.
 

If a concern arises:
1. Respond – listen and reassure, do not promise confidentiality
2. Record – write down facts as soon as possible
3. Report – inform the Club Safeguarding Officer immediately

 

Serious concerns may be referred to:
- Social Services
- Police
- FAW Safeguarding Team
All concerns must be handled with the child’s welfare as the paramount consideration.

 

9. Confidentiality
 

- Information will be shared only on a need-to-know basis
- Records will be stored securely
- Data protection laws will be followed

 

10. Training
 

- All relevant personnel will complete safeguarding training
- FAW Safeguarding Award is recommended for key roles
- Training will be refreshed regularly

 

11. Monitoring and Review
 

- This policy will be reviewed annually
- Updated in line with FAW guidance and legislation
- Feedback from members will be considered
